When we talk about web hosting servers, there are three major categories - shared website hosting servers, VPS (virtual hosting servers) and dedicated hosting servers. Shared web servers host many clients and therefore the resources per hosting account are limited, virtual private server plans give you more configuration independence, but also affect other private virtual hosting servers on the hardware node if used unwisely, and dedicated servers give you the option to do everything you think fit without meddling with anyone else.

Why would you require a dedicated hosting server?

Dedicated servers are commonly much more expensive than shared web hosting servers or private virtual hosting servers. Why would anyone, then, use them? The answer is quite simple. If your company has a resource-absorbing web page, or simply has very specific server architecture requirements, the most appropriate option is a dedicated server. For someone who is prepared to invest in safety and dependability, the bigger price is of no concern. You receive root-level access and can utilize 100% of the physical machine's system resources without anyone else using these resources and meddling with your online portals.

Hardware specifications

Most web hosting suppliers, including us at Ferret Hosting, offer several different hardware architectures you can select from in accordance with your necessities. The hardware architectures include different types of processors, a different number of cores, different RAM memory and disk drive sizes and different monthly bandwidth allowances. You can choose a hosting Control Panel, which is a useful software tool if you would like to utilize the web server for website hosting purposes solely and prefer not to use SSH for all the modifications you will be making. We provide 3 kinds of hosting CP software - Hepsia, DirectAdmin and cPanel.

The Control Panel of your preference

If you are a self-reliant Linux OS user (our web hosting servers are running on Linux or other Unix-based Operating Systems), you could manage your dedicated server via an SSH terminal only. That, however, could be inconvenient, even more so if you want to grant full server root privileges to somebody else who has less technical knowledge than yourself. This is why having web hosting CP software installed is an excellent idea. The Hepsia hosting Control Panel GUI that we provide does not offer full root-level access and is mostly suitable for somebody who has multiple web portals that swallow lots of system resources, but would like to manage the online portals, databases and electronic mails through an intuitive Control Panel. The DirectAdmin and cPanel hosting CPs, on the other hand, grant complete root access and offer three access levels - root, reseller and user. If you plan to resell web hosting packages instead of using the dedicated web hosting server solely for yourself, you should pick one of these two.

Server monitoring and backup services

Last but not least, there is the matter of monitoring the dedicated hosting server and of backing it up. In the event of a predicament with your hosting server, like a non-responsive Apache or a network downtime, it is advisable to have some kind of monitoring platform enabled. Here at Ferret Hosting the system administrators monitor all dedicated servers for ping timeouts, and, if you order a Managed Services upgrade, they monitor the separate services on the dedicated hosting server as well. Backups are also an extra option - the hosting supplier offers you data backups on our own backup web servers. You could select a type of RAID that would permit you to save the very same data on 2 server hard disks as a protective measure in the event of a server hard disk failure, or in case someone whom you have ranted complete root-level access erases something accidentally.
